Here is the slide deck of the talk I gave last week during the FirstTuesday event.
Speaking about a topic I feel passionate for was an exciting opportunity. All in all, I think it went well. Although my 20 minutes passed very quickly, I tried to pack as much as I could in the talk. There are, however, a few things I would do differently, should I have other such opportunities:
- Spend less time on the definition: even if ‘usability’ is a word we hear quite often, it is a topic by far misunderstood, victim of too many myths. Tackling these subjects accounted for 50% of the talk. Even though fighting ignorance remains an everyday challenge, I feel that less place for blah-blah and more for practical examples communicate better the true nature of usability;
- Introduce new subjects: one thing in particular has failed to make an appearance in the slides, it is how usability testing integrates in the website design workflow and which steps are necessary, from planning to writing reports;
- Give more examples: Grégory Pouy, who talked about buzz marketing, not only mentioned Dale’s Cone of Experience but also put it in practice by demonstrating several real examples of alternative marketing methods. I think it highly contributes in making the presentation easier to understand and keeping the audience focused.
